Mark Guthrie was a reliever for the Mets who played one season for them in 2002. Despite having a putrid season, the Mets did have a few bright spots; one of them being Mark Guthrie.
Guthrie, a reliever from Buffalo, had a 5-3 record with a terrific 2.44 ERA. Guthrie also had a 30-plus inning streak with out giving up a run.
Guthrie came out of one of the best bullpens the Mets had had in a while with closer Armando Benitez, setup man David "Stormy" Weathers, fellow middle reliever Scott Strickland, and long man Grant Roberts.
Guthrie, who is now retired, played a total of 14 years, ending in 2003 and beginning in 1989, when he was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals. He was acquired by the Mets in a trade with the Oakland Athletics for David Justice. Along with Guthrie, the Mets got Tyler Yates.
Guthrie also played for the Twins, Dodgers, Red Sox, Cubs (twice), Devil Rays, Blue Jays, and Athletics, a total of 8 teams in his career.
